JKS England Squad Fund Raising Event - The Knaresborough Bed Race 2014
The 49th edition of the Great Knaresborough Bed Race will take place on the 14th of June 2014.
It was just over 3 months ago that the 5 "Glee Club" members of the Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club discussed one pleasant evening, entering the Bed Race just for the fun of it. As honorary president of the Glee Club, it was only right and proper that we should invite Sensei Matt Price if he fancied having a go too. To our dismay he said yes.
As the event is limited to 90 teams and 142 had entered, the entries went to a bollot. harrogate karate Club came out 86th of the 90 teams. we were in!
And so a crack team was put together to destroy the opposition and raise some much-needed JKS funds along the way.
The team consists of:
Sensei Matt Price (El Presidente)
Dave Bulmer (Chinhai)
Brian Lister (Crash Test)
Rich Payne (Lobster)
Pete Bank ( Dr Buzz)
Steve Brown (Badger)
As a small passenger is also required on the "bed", Alice Whittington (No Name) was recruited from the karate club ranks.
If you visit the website (www.bedrace.co.uk) and watch the video you will see that every bed, apart from racing 2.5 miles up and down the hills of this Yorkshire market town and crossing a river, also has to take
part in a themed parade before hand. This year the theme is Children's TV and Film. After much deliberation it was decided we were going to be "The Addams Family".
The characters pretty much picked themselves
Sensei Price is Gomez Addams (Looks great in a suit, leader of the pack)
Dave Bulmer is Morticia (Naturally slim, charming and dare I say...sexy?)
Brian Lister is Uncle Fester (Bald and likes explosions)
Rich Payne is Wednesday ( No-one else would wear a dress)
Pete Banks is Lurch (Tall and owns an evening suit with tails)
Steve Brown is Pugsley (Well-padded and unafraid of pain)
Alice Whittington is Grandma (Has long hair and is wise beyond her years)
After a practice push and a dry run round the actual course one Thursday evening, the team is as ready as it's ever going to be. This event is a real thigh-burner and Sensei price has incorporated a lot of squats into our usual traing sessions to increase our chances of success.
Some of you who were on the recent Black and Brown belt course in Nottingham will have already pledged funds to Sensei Price to complete this challenge. Could we ask club instructors to promote this event at every opportunity and visit Facebook for any
updates and photographs and help raise money for the JKS England team.
Thank you for your support and hopefully, funds!
