On Tuesday 17th November, a special evening course with JKS Hombu dojo instructor Hajime Matsue was held at Leeds Karate Academy.
The evening consisted of two 1.5 hour classes. The first class, open to all grades, saw Matsue Sensei concentrating on Kihon, where he worked course participants through various drills in the transition between stances to generate maximum power. Sensei then taught katas Heian Godan and Enpi in fine detail explaining key points, which were also expertly demonstrated by Sensei himself. The first class culminated with Ippon Kumite using kicks, sweeps and spinning counters.
The second class which was reserved for Dan grades was a kicking masterclass. Anyone who has trained with Matsue know his superior kicking ability and this class only served to enhance that reputation. All Kicks were worked slowly and then at speed. The kicking theme then continued with partners and special attention was paid to mawashi and ura mawashi. The class then moved onto a detailed examination of the kata Nijushiho before finishing back to the theme of kicking with the Koten Kata Rantai.
Throughout the whole evening Matsue Sensei demonstrated why he is so highly regarded within the JKS for his technical ability. The course was enjoyed by all that attended and the feedback has been superb.
